About SHS

Slaughterhouse Survivors (SHS) Animal Rescue is a women run, 501(c)3 registered non-profit organization rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing as many animals as possible.

What started as a spontaneous rescue of a handful of dogs from a local slaughterhouse in 2016, has grown into something we NEVER expected. Coming from backgrounds where you almost take animal protection laws for granted, we couldn't ignore the suffering of animals and were in a position to do something, so decided to step up.

Registered in the Chinese city of Harbin, where thousands of dogs are brutally slaughtered each week in the illegal dog meat trade, we are a small team composed of animal lovers, veterinary professionals and an essential network of Chinese locals fighting for the voiceless. We work hard to spread education and advocate for the animals directly within the local communities. We have made strides, but we still have a long way to go.

Over 8 years and 4,000+ animals later, we’ve learned that real rescue isn’t polished...it’s raw, emotional, messy, heartbreaking, hilarious, and and as challenging as it is rewarding. We are not a business and we don’t aim to be “professional.” We aim to be authentic.

Everything we do is powered by compassion, grit, and the mind-blowing generosity of both friends and strangers.

Our Mission

RESCUE

We rescue animals from the horrors of the black market dog meat trade, as well as situations of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. Whether illegally farmed in inhumane conditions, stolen pets or discarded puppies, their fate relies solely on the compassion of strangers. Visit our FAQ for more information.

REHABILITATE

What’s unique to us is that we provide our animals with medical care as well as social, mental, and physical rehabilitation to help them heal and ensure their suffering at the hands of humans ends with us. We have our own vets at the Safehouse that truly do thankless work (the dogs hate them). We can’t save them all, but we sure as sh*t try.

RE-HOME

We work to find loving forever homes for our animals, where they can live the happy and fulfilling lives they truly deserve. It’s also a vital part of our work to ensure we can make space at the Safehouse and continue to combat the illegal dog meat trade and rescue innocent lives.

REPEAT + ADVOCATE

It’s exhausting, but we refuse to quit. Through our efforts we continue to advocate for animal welfare through educational programs, public awareness, and working with local authorities to enforce laws and close more dog meat restaurants. Spreading awareness on the needs and feelings of animals is crucial to creating a better world for them.
